The Pelvic Practice

Physical Therapy

Pelvic floor physical therapy focuses on the muscles, joints, and connective tissues that support your bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs. These muscles play a key role in core stability, posture, and everyday function. When they become weak, overactive, or uncoordinated, it can lead to discomfort and dysfunction.

Conditions We Treat

  • Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine, often related to pelvic floor muscle weakness, overactivity, or poor coordination. Pelvic floor physical therapy helps restore strength, control, and bladder habits to reduce or eliminate leakage.

  • Diastasis recti is the separation of the abdominal muscles, commonly occurring during pregnancy or with increased abdominal pressure. Pelvic floor physical therapy focuses on improving core strength, coordination, and pressure management to support functional recovery.

  • Sexual dysfunction can include pain, decreased sensation, or difficulty with arousal or orgasm related to pelvic floor muscle tension, weakness, or nerve involvement. Pelvic floor physical therapy addresses muscle balance, circulation, and neuromuscular control to improve comfort and function.

  • Endometriosis-related pain may persist due to pelvic floor muscle tension, nerve sensitization, and altered movement patterns. Pelvic floor physical therapy helps reduce pain through manual therapy, relaxation techniques, and nervous system regulation.

  • Constipation and fecal incontinence often result from pelvic floor muscle dysfunction or poor coordination during bowel movements. Pelvic floor physical therapy retrains the muscles, improves bowel mechanics, and promotes healthy toileting habits.

  • Vulvodynia and vestibulodynia are chronic pain conditions affecting the vulvar or vestibular tissues without an identifiable cause. Pelvic floor physical therapy addresses muscle tension, nerve sensitivity, and tissue tolerance to reduce pain.

  • Pudendal neuralgia is chronic pelvic pain caused by irritation or compression of the pudendal nerve. Pelvic floor physical therapy aims to reduce nerve sensitivity, decrease muscle tension, and improve pelvic alignment and mobility.

  • Coccydynia is pain at the tailbone, often worsened by sitting or transitions. Pelvic floor physical therapy addresses surrounding muscle tension, joint mobility, and posture to relieve pain and improve comfort.

  • Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when pelvic organs descend due to weakened support structures. Pelvic floor physical therapy helps improve muscle strength, coordination, and pressure management to reduce symptoms and support pelvic stability.

  • Dyspareunia and vaginismus involve pain or involuntary muscle tightening during vaginal penetration. Pelvic floor physical therapy focuses on muscle relaxation, desensitization, and gradual retraining to restore comfort and confidence.

  • Interstitial cystitis is a chronic bladder condition characterized by pelvic pain, urinary urgency, and frequency. Pelvic floor physical therapy helps calm overactive pelvic muscles, reduce pain, and improve bladder function.

  • During pregnancy and postpartum, pelvic floor physical therapy supports the body through changes such as pain, weakness, pressure, or incontinence. Treatment focuses on recovery, strength, alignment, and safe return to daily activities

  • Vaginal atrophy involves thinning and dryness of vaginal tissues, often related to hormonal changes. Pelvic floor physical therapy can improve tissue mobility, circulation, and comfort while addressing associated pelvic floor dysfunction.

  • Pelvic girdle instability involves pain and impaired movement around the sacroiliac joints due to altered load transfer. Pelvic floor physical therapy enhances core and pelvic stability, improves movement patterns, and reduces pain.
